In the face of rising natural gas and oil prices, the Glacier High School project needed an economical and environmentally beneficial alternative. Since the region has readily-available sources of wood fuels, a biomass-fired boiler design was ideal to provide this cost savings.

Precision Energy Services, Inc., (PES) was awarded a turnkey contract to provide a wood-fueled hot water boiler at the new 200,000 square foot Glacier High School complex in Kalispell, MT. The system came online in May 2007 supplying 6 MMBtu/hr (net) of hot water and building heat to the facility. A PLC-based control system with touch-screen operator interface is fully integrated with building systems and allows variable boiler firing rates. PES provided the boiler, fuel receiving and handling systems; including a fuel reclaim auger, belt transport system, and bucket elevator. A remote monitoring system allows the school to log data from the boiler ensuring the system operates at peak performance. The under-fed stoker combustor was designed to utilize woody biomass fuels.
